Meet the Mentors
There are 75 FYE Mentors for the '08-'09 school year. All of them were hand chosen by a committee and went through an interview process and many hours of training. They are all unique in their own ways and come from a wide variety of backgrounds. As you will notice, there are many different major and minors as well as other campus involvement. Christopher is a senior from Milford, MI. He is dual majoring in Political Science with a concentration in Public Administration and Psychology with a concentration in Human Sexuality while minoring in Legal Studies. In the future, Christopher will be attending law school. He is a returning mentor and joined because he feels that being an FYE mentor is one of the most prestigious leadership positions on campus. It gives him the opportunity to show the first-year students what Central has to offer. Chris enjoys the chance to promote Central and give first-year students the tools they need to ensure their success in the first year of college. Christopher is involved in Phi Alpha Delta, Student Government Association, Recreation Club, and intramural sports. |

Laura is a senior and returning mentor from Midland, MI. She is majoring in Secondary Education English with a minor in History. In the future, she plans to teach high school English and love it :). She currently works as a Day Camp Counselor during the summer. Laura joined the FYE program because she loves being a student at CMU and wants to make other students' freshman year a great experience. She is also involved in Kappa Delta Pi, Student Michigan Education Association, and is a Campus Ambassador. |

She wants to be a mentor this year because she wants to help new students get to know CMU and make them feel like CMU can be their new home. Abby is involved in Pre-Med Club, Barnes Hall Council, Habitat for Humanity, University Academic Senate Committee, Homecoming Parade Committee, Sibs Weekend and is a Leadership Advancement Scholar. |
Zachary Benke

Zach is a sophomore and new mentor from Sternsville, MI. He has a double major of Biomedical and Psychology with a minor in Chemistry. In the future, he hopes to become a Doctor of Osteopathy. Zach became a mentor this year with a hope of showing students that college is something to be embraced and taken advantage of, not feared. Zach is involved in Pre-Med Club, Osteopathy Club, Beta Beta Beta, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, and is on the Dean's List. |
Courtney Bernard

Courtney joined the FYE program because she loves working with students and helping them have a positive introduction to and experience at college. She is also involved in Kappa Delta Pi and His House Christian Fellowship, is a Leadership Safari Guide and an Alternative Breaks Site Leader. |

Casey is a sophomore and new mentor to the FYE program. She is from Dansville, MI. Casey is majoring in Integrative Public Relations with minors in Leadership, Public Affairs, and Advertising. Her ultimate goal is to obtain a public relations position in the government. Casey is currently employed at Abercrombie and Fitch. She applied to be a mentor because she has always strived to make an impact and feels that FYE will allow her to do that in a fun, creative and different way. Casey is also involved in Trout Hall Council and E-Board, Public Relations Student Society of America, and the Honors Program. |

Chris is currently employed at the SAC in customer service. He joined the FYE program because he wanted to obtain teaching experience and help first-year students along the way. Alicia Clark

In the future, Alicia would like to teach elementary school. She became an FYE mentor to give first-year students a positive and encouraging experience at CMU. She wants to share what she has learned with other people and learn from them at the same time. Alicia is also involved in His House Christian Fellowship and the Education & Human Services Residential College. |

Sarah is a returning mentor and senior from Holly, MI. She has a major in Integrative Public Relations and minors in Interpersonal and Public Communication and Business Administration. She currently works as the CMU Public Broadcasting receptionist and as an intern for the March of Dimes but has plans to work for a public relations agency. Sarah chose to be an FYE mentor because she knows how important it is that students get acclimated to college. It goes by fast and and she wants them to be able to take advantage of as many opportunities as possible. In addition to FYE, Sarah is involved with PR Central, Public Relations Student Society of America, and serves as the Phi Eta Sigma National Honor Society Vice-President. |

In the future, Elaine would like to become a teacher and academic advisor. She joined FYE because she wants to help new students transition into college and get her foot in the door with teaching. |

Chad is a junior and returning mentor from Armada, MI majoring in Therapeutic Recreation with a minor in Psychology. Chad plans to become an Occupational Therapist after attending graduate school. He is currently employed at the Down Under Food Court. Chad became an FYE mentor because he enjoys helping other people and learning a lot from his students. He is also involved in Campus Crusade for Christ, Honors Program, David Garcia Project, Pre-Occupational Therapy Club, and is a Leadership Safari Guide. |

With a major in Commercial Recreation and minors in Hospitality and Event Management, Brittany hopes to become a Director of Entertainment in Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Brittany is currently employed as a waitress. She joined the FYE program because she thought FYE was helpful for her and wanted to help other first-year students along the way. Brittany is also involved in the Volleyball Club Team and Phi Eta Sigma. |

Brittany is a sophomore and new mentor this year from Montrose, MI. Brittany has a major in English and a minor in History and hopes to teach secondary education in the future. She is currently employed as a babysitter. Brittany applied to be a mentor because she thought it was a great opportunity and will hopefully give her some good teaching experience. Brittany had a great peer mentor last year that inspired her to help guide other first-year students. Brittany is also involved in Phi Mu and Sibs Weekend Committee. |

Linday is a senior pursuing a degree in Psychology with a minor in Human Development. The West Bloomfield, MI native is planning to go to graduate school for counseling studies and then hopes to work in the forensic counseling field. She is looking forward to her first year as a mentor because she enjoys forming close interpersonal relationships with others to assist them with issues or concerns of any kind. Katelyn is a junior and new mentor from Manchester, MI. She is majoring in Health Administration with minors in Business Administration and Leadership. While she is currently employed at Bennigan’s, she looks forward to finishing her undergraduate degree and continuing her education at the University of North Carolina. Katelyn chose to become an FYE mentor because she had such a great experience in her FYE 101 class. She feels she was able to learn more about Central by taking the class than she would have without and wants to share that experience with others. |

She would ultimately like to work in K-12 Education Policy. Courtney works as a Student Assistant in the Office of International Education and is also a cashier. Courtney had a great experience when she took FYE 101 and wanted to have the same impact on someone else. Richard is a senior and returning mentor from Farmington, MI. He is pursuing a dual major in Special Education and Child Development. Richard currently works as a Student Manager in the Down Under Food Court, but in the future plans to be a special education teacher and open up a montessori school. Richard is one of two Education & Human Services Residential College mentors and became a mentor because he wanted to give other first-year students the same experience as he had as a first year student. He credits FYE with getting him involved on campus and hopes to show that to others. He is involved in Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates as well as other student organizations on campus. |
Kristen Hudy

Kristen is a junior and new mentor from Redford, MI. She is dual majoring in Accounting and Finance with minors in Legal Studies and Spanish. Kristen was an RA during the 07-08 school year and became involved in the mentoring program because she enjoys being a "go-to" person. She wants to continue her involvement in "showing the ropes" to new CMU students even though she won't be an RA this year. Kristen is also involved in the Student Accounting Society. |

She is pursuing a degree in K-12 Physical Education and School Health Education with minors in Leadership Studies and High School Athletic Coaching. With this degree, Kaitlin is hoping to get her Masters in Athletic Administration at CMU and be an Athletic Director for a high school or small college. For now, she is an RA in Troutman and works at Director's Cut. She joined the FYE mentor team because she loves CMU and wants to help incoming students transition into college life at CMU. In addition to his work with FYE, Evan is involved with the CMU Brass Band, Wind Ensemble, and the Percussion Ensemble. |

With her majors of Mathematics and Integrated Science, she plans to teach and coach at a high school. Her reason for becoming a peer mentor is to help prepare her for her future job as a teacher. Kimberly is involved in Student Michigan Education Association, National Society of Collegiate Scholars, NSTM, Kappa Mu Epsilon, Hall Council, and plays in intramural sports. |

Erin Potts

She is a returning mentor that loves working with students of all ages to enhance their academic knowledge and personal growth, but she especially likes making first-year college students feel welcome at CMU and helping show all the awesome opportunities available. She is a dual major in English and History. Currently, she works as a Student Assistant in the Honors Program office and Supplemental Instruction Leader for HST 101. In the future, she would like to work in either Secondary/Higher Education, Public Administration, or Legal Affairs (or wherever life takes her). Kimberly is involved in the Safer Sex Patrol, Alpha Leadership Experience, The Voting Brigade, and is a Campus Ambassador. |

In the future, she would like to be an event planner and/or human resources specialist. Brittiany became an FYE mentor because she enjoys being involved and helping others out as much as she can. She knows how important the first year is and loves being able to help make the beginning of the year a great one! Brittiany is also involved in the Society for Human Resource Management. |

She plans to teach in an inclusive classroom near her hometown and eventually become an assistant principal wherever the road may take her. She currently works as an Assistant Manager at Family Dollar. Laura joined the FYE mentoring team because she really wants to make first-year students have a very memorable and enjoyable year. She knows the transition is not an easy one, but she is more than willing to help out in any way she can. Laura is also involved in the Student Council for Exceptional Children. |

Jessy chose to return as a mentor because being an FYE mentor has enabled her to make connections with students that she might not otherwise have been able to make on campus. Samantha is a Psychology and Spanish major from Milford, MI. She is a junior this year and new mentor. In the future, she would like to become a high school counselor. Through mentoring, Samantha would like to interact with first-year students in order to positively impact their behaviors, beliefs, and experiences. She is also involved in the Organization of Women Leaders. |
Courtney Traver

Courtney is a returning mentor and junior from New Lothrop, MI. She has a major in Biomedical Science and a minor in Chemistry and plans to become a trauma surgeon. Courtney chose to be an FYE mentor as she wanted to experience something new and challenging as she is trying to overcome her fear of public speaking. She also wants to meet incoming first-year students and help them transition to the new environment of college life. Courtney is involved with the Health Professions Residential College and volunteers for many events on campus. |

Alicia is a junior and returning mentor from Brighton, MI. Currently, she works as a SAC Lifeguard but hopes to be an emergency room physician assistant. Alicia is majoring in Neuroscience and Health Fitness with minors of Psychology, Art, and Pre-PA. Alicia joined the FYE mentoring team because she loves helping people, and to be able to help new students make this big transition in life is absolutely amazing. Seeing overwhelmed first-year students develop into experienced CMU students is so rewarding for her. Alicia is involved in Orchesis Dance Theatre, Leadership Safari, Audience of One Dance Ministry, intramural sports, His House Christian Fellowship, and Chip Crew. |

Jessica is a junior and new mentor this year from Sand Creek, MI. She is pursuing a degree in Special Education with a concentration in Emotional Impairment and minoring in American Sign Language and Child Development. She would like to work for a preschool in special or deaf education. She is excited to work with new students and mentor them through their first semester and show them how awesome CMU is! Jessica is involved in Alpha Gamma Delta and Kappa Delta Pi. |

Nick is a senior and returning mentor from Davison, MI. He is majoring in Psychology and International Relations with minors in Sociology and French. Nick is currently a Research Assistant and works in concessions. Nick continues to be a mentor because he has had such a great time at Central, and he wants to be able to share his experiences with new students. Nick is also Residence Hall Assembly President, a Campus Ambassador, an Alternative Breaks Site Leader, and is involved in NATIONAL Residence Hall Honorary and Sexual Aggression Peer Advocates. |

Michelle is a sophomore pursuing a degree in Elementary Education with three minors of Integrated Science, Middle Level Education, and Planned Program with the hope of becoming an elementary teacher. Currently, she works in the Robinson Residential Restaurant. She is a new mentor this year from White Lake, MI. Michelle joined the FYE program because she wants to help and guide first-year students down the right path for a successful college experience. She is currently the Calkins Hall President and is involved in the Education & Human Services Residential College, National Residence Hall Honorary, and Residence Hall Assembly. |

Andrew is a senior from Southgate, MI and a new mentor this year. His major is Spanish Education with a minor in Bilingual-Bicultural Education, and he plans to be either a teacher or professor. He is a Multicultural Advisor in Barnes Hall and is involved in the Barnes Hall Council as well as Spanish Club, and the Public Service Residential College. Andrew became a mentor this year because he wants to continue to make a difference at Central. |

Hayley is a senior and returning mentor from Farmington Hills, MI. She is pursuing a major in Spanish and a minor in English. Currently, she works as a SPN 101 Teaching Assistant. In the future, Hayley would like to teach either Spanish or English in an elementary or high school. After being recruited to be an FYE mentor, her positive experience became the reason she decided to re-explore her desire to teach. Hayley is involved in the Sibs Weekend Committee, Phi Alpha Delta, CMU Spanish Club, LeaderShape 2007, LEAD ME, and is a weekly volunteer at the Isabella County Community Soup Kitchen. |
Megan Wedge

Megan is a junior and new mentor. She is majoring in Marketing and is from Sandusky, MI. Currently, Megan works at the EHS-Center for Student Services in Ronan as a Student Assistant. In the future, she would like to open her own restaurant. Megan wants to make the incoming students' first year an easy transition. As a mentor, she would like to answer students questions and guide them through their first-year experiences. Megan is involved in intramural flag football in the fall and volunteers for various groups and causes. |

Elizabeth is a sophomore and new mentor from Watersmeet, MI. She is majoring in Communication Disorders and Child Development and plans to move back to the U.P. to work in the school system. She currently works as an RA in Sweeney Hall. She wanted to be a mentor because she would like to encourage and motivate freshman to explore all the opportunities CMU has to offer. She would also like them to discover the amazing community here as they acclimate themselves to their new surroundings.
