What is expected of FYE 101 instructors?
- All instructors, and prospective instructors, must complete a sequence of workshops focused on first-year teaching and learning prior to teaching in the FYE Program.
- All instructors commit to participate in FYE Faculty
Dialogue Days sharing ideas, resources and best practices each
academic semester.
Submit, prior to the fall semester, a written syllabus for review and approval by the FYE Coordinator. - Use the approved FYE textbook.
- Complete student opinion surveys of your instruction at the end of the course, using the approved FYE 101 student evaluation form.
- Adhere to teaching components outlined in the master course syllabus, focusing on topics that include: the value of a liberal education, the importance of academic integrity, and the value of diversity.
- Assign regular and substantive reading and writing assignments.
- Administer the College Student Inventory (CSI) to all students.
- Maintain challenging and fair academic standards appropriate for a letter-graded academic course.
- Engage students in a substantive community service/service learning initiatives.
How is FYE 101 structured?
- An eight-week or 16-week course that meets weekly (either 50 minutes or 100 minutes)
- Groups of approximately 25 students
- Specifically designed to provide an alternate structure and atmosphere to most first semester general education courses
- Focused on “active learning”
- Each instructor is assigned an FYE peer mentor, who provides direct support to the students in the course and assists the instructor in facilitating learning experiences both in and out of the classroom.
What are the benefits of teaching FYE 101?
- The training and active collaboration among instructors provides significant professional development experiences that can be documented and applied to other courses and areas of work.
- The connection to faculty and staff from diverse backgrounds creates a forum for innovation and collaborative inquiry.
- Partnering with a peer mentor provides opportunities to advise or mentor a rising professional and collaborate on research or a creative endeavor
- Financially, regular faculty members are paid the equivalent of a
1-credit overload for teaching FYE 101. All other instructors are
compensated for the 1-credit course consistent with “Guidelines for
Credit Hour Salaries” found under the Temporary Faculty Link at the
Faculty Personnel Services website
